A report released in October 2026 by Environment America's Georgia Research & Policy Center and Frontier Group identified the presence and persistence of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in Georgia's lakes and rivers.

PFAS are synthetic chemicals that are difficult to break down and have been found in numerous lakes, rivers and streams across the United States, with detections reported in at least 40 states.

These substances have been increasingly associated with health problems, including various cancers.
