Greater Boston Legal Services filed a lawsuit on Thursday seeking an injunction that would require the state to fund the third year of the HomeBASE rental‑assistance program. The filing requests that the state provide $15,000 in stabilization payments to keep two single mothers housed before Thanksgiving.
The lawsuit targets the state’s decision to pause the third year of the HomeBASE program, a move that prompted the legal action. Among the plaintiffs is Elizabeth Alfred, who, along with another single mother, faces eviction without the additional assistance.
Plaintiffs argue that the injunction is necessary to prevent the evictions and to ensure the continuity of rental aid for families relying on the program.
