The Plano Police Department announced on September 19, 2026 that it has stopped installing more than 90 Flock surveillance cameras. The halt comes after the state of Texas paused the funding that had supported the expansion, and department officials said they will not look for other financing sources until the legislature acts.
The city had been adding Flock cameras to its public‑safety network using money allocated by the state. With that financial stream now on hold, the police department decided to suspend any further deployment of the equipment.
Police Chief Ed Drain confirmed the decision, noting that the department’s priorities must align with available resources. He indicated that the pause applies to all new camera placements and that existing installations will remain operational.
City leaders are waiting for new legislation from the Austin Capitol to address the funding gap. Until such measures are passed, the department will refrain from seeking alternative funding options for the Flock camera program.
The suspension affects the planned growth of the surveillance system across Plano. Officials said they will continue to evaluate the situation and will resume expansion if and when state funding is restored or new legislative authority is granted.
