A man died in a traffic crash on the East Freeway near Mercury Drive on September 27, 2026, after trying to run across the highway.

Houston Police Department investigators said the driver of a disabled vehicle had run out of gasoline and attempted to cross the freeway to obtain fuel. Police located the disabled vehicle on the roadway and are investigating the fatal incident.
