A brush fire known as the Buzzard Fire ignited on a hillside west of the 5 Freeway near the Kern County community of Lebec early Tuesday morning. The blaze, reported at about 8:00 a.m., had burned roughly 180 acres by the time officials issued an evacuation warning and shut one lane of the freeway.
The fire’s location, about 70 miles north of Los Angeles, placed it within a region prone to dry vegetation and rapid fire spread during the summer months.
