Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority announced Wednesday that its One Car Challenge program will be offered to households throughout the county. The initiative provides a cash incentive of $600 to families that limit the use of personal vehicles and adopt public transit, biking, walking or other alternative travel methods.
The countywide rollout follows a 2023 pilot in Santa Monica that enrolled 300 households. That trial demonstrated the feasibility of encouraging reduced vehicle reliance, prompting Metro to expand the effort. In the new phase, up to 2,000 households across Los Angeles County may qualify for the $600 payment, contingent on meeting the program’s usage criteria.
Metro’s expansion aims to lower the amount of personal‑vehicle driving in the region and to promote greater use of the public transportation network and non‑motorized travel options. By offering a direct financial reward, the agency hopes to motivate more residents to shift away from single‑occupancy cars, supporting broader goals of reduced traffic congestion and improved air quality throughout the county.
