Los Angeles police reported a burglary on September 5 in the 2700 block of Motor Avenue, Palms, in which a thief stole approximately $180,000 worth of designer bags and jewelry after gaining entry through an unlocked sliding door on a second‑floor balcony.
According to the department, the suspect first climbed onto the balcony of a second‑floor unit, then slipped through the open sliding door and entered the apartment without forcing a lock. The door had been left unsecured, allowing the intruder direct access to the interior.
Inside the residence, the perpetrator took multiple high‑end handbags and assorted jewelry, including pieces described as designer items. The total estimated value of the stolen goods is $180,000. No cash or other personal effects were reported missing.
Detectives are reviewing surveillance footage from nearby buildings and have canvassed the neighborhood for witnesses who may have seen the individual or observed the balcony climb. The investigation remains active, and officers are asking anyone with information to contact the LAPD.
The incident occurred in Los Angeles’ Westside, an area where many apartments feature sliding doors that open onto balconies. Police officials noted that leaving such doors unlocked can create a point of entry for burglars, and they reminded residents to secure all exterior access points.
No injuries were reported, and the occupants of the apartment were not present at the time of the theft. The LAPD has not released a description of the suspect, and the case is ongoing.
