Research scientist Yan Boulanger of the Canadian Forest Service explained on Quebec AM that wildfires in British Columbia are producing a larger impact on local populations than comparable fires in Quebec. The interview, conducted by journalist Rachel Watts, highlighted that the differences stem from a combination of climate conditions, terrain characteristics and population density across the two provinces.
Boulanger noted that British Columbia’s climate, marked by hotter and drier periods during the fire season, creates conditions that allow flames to spread more rapidly. In contrast, Quebec’s climate, while still prone to seasonal wildfires, typically experiences cooler temperatures and higher moisture levels that can slow fire progression.
The scientist also pointed to the province’s varied terrain as a factor. British Columbia’s mountainous landscape and dense forested areas can funnel winds and accelerate fire movement, whereas Quebec’s terrain, though also forested, generally presents fewer extreme topographic features that amplify fire behavior.
Population density further differentiates the two regions. British Columbia’s larger number of communities situated near fire‑prone zones means more people are directly exposed to smoke, evacuation orders and other fire‑related disruptions. Quebec, while also home to settlements near forested areas, has a lower concentration of residents in the most fire‑vulnerable locations.
Both provinces experience seasonal wildfires each year, but recent fire seasons have been especially severe in British Columbia, according to Boulanger. The heightened severity, combined with the climatic, topographic and demographic factors he described, accounts for the greater population impact observed in the western province.
