Prime Minister Mark Carney and EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will meet in Montreal on Thursday and Friday, Oct 29-30, to pursue deeper cooperation between Canada and the European Union as a trade dispute with the United States intensifies.

The summit, which will bring together 27 participants, is intended to outline steps for strengthening the bilateral relationship after the EU decided not to grant Canada associate member status.

The decision follows an earlier proposal by von der Leyen to make Canada the EU’s first associate member, a proposal that was later rejected by the EU.
