Lawyer Lawrence David of the Consumer Law Group filed an emergency request in the Quebec Superior Court on October 7, 2026. The petition asks the court to issue an order that would require newly elected members of Quebec’s provincial legislature to swear an oath of allegiance to the King and to stay the 2022 law that mandates the oath.

The request aims to halt the enforcement of the 2022 legislation that obliges legislators to take the royal oath, a law that has been in place since its enactment in 2022.
