On October 1, 2026, the Association des juristes progressistes and the Clinique juridique de Saint‑Michel filed a lawsuit in the Quebec Superior Court asking that Montreal’s newly adopted bylaw prohibiting insults toward police officers and other municipal employees be suspended.

The filing contends that the bylaw violates freedoms protected by the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms as well as the Quebec Charter of Human Rights and Freedoms.

Montreal’s bylaw, which criminalizes insults aimed at police and municipal staff, has already attracted legal challenges since its recent adoption.
