The Liberal Party of Canada announced it will table a bill in Ottawa on Oct. 27, 2026 that would prevent people whose only condition is a mental illness from accessing medical assistance in dying and would allow advance directives for end‑of‑life decisions.

The measure aims to amend Canada’s existing MAID legislation, which currently permits eligibility for a range of serious health conditions, by adding restrictions for mental‑only cases and introducing provisions for advance directives.
