The Montreal Metro is set to celebrate its 60th anniversary on Wednesday, 30 September 2026, but officials from the Société de transport de Montréal and transit experts warn that current maintenance spending is not keeping pace with the system’s ongoing wear.

The STM’s chief executive said the funds allocated for upkeep are insufficient to counter daily degradation, a view shared by transit specialists who note the shortfall could impact service quality.

The concerns come as Quebec’s provincial election draws near, with party leaders offering little attention to public transit issues in their campaigns.
