Industry Minister Mélanie Joly warned the U.S. owner of steelmaker Stelco on Oct. 16, 2026, in Toronto that it must honor the job‑preservation commitments made at the time of purchase, or risk being forced to sell its Canadian assets.
The caution comes after the recent acquisition of the Ontario steel producer by a U.S. firm that pledged to maintain existing employment levels. The minister indicated that non‑compliance could trigger a requirement to divest the Canadian operations.
