On Monday, Oct. 5, 2026, the City of Montreal and the Quebec Ministry of the Environment appeared before a court to argue over which party should finance the remediation of a hydrocarbon spill.

The spill, which occurred in 2024, released hundreds of litres of hydrocarbons into the Saint Lawrence River at Pointe‑aux‑Trembles, contaminating the waterway.

Two years after the incident, the two governmental bodies are contesting responsibility for the cleanup expenses.
