The City of Montreal and the Quebec Ministry of the Environment have taken a legal dispute to court over who must fund the cleanup of a hydrocarbon spill that contaminated the Saint Lawrence River in Pointe‑aux‑Trembles. The spill, which released hundreds of liters of hydrocarbons in October 2024, remains without an identified source, leaving liability unclear.

The disagreement follows two years after the black‑oil incident, during which no party has been held responsible for remediation. Both parties are now arguing over payment for the ongoing cleanup efforts.
