The City of Montreal, in partnership with Energir, started feeding natural gas generated from organic waste collected in brown bins into the municipal natural gas distribution network on October 13, 2026. This marks the first use of household‑derived biogas to supplement Montreal’s conventional natural gas supply.
The initiative leverages biogas produced from residential organic waste, integrating it into the existing pipeline system to augment the city’s overall gas provision.
