The City of Montreal and gas distributor Energir began feeding natural gas produced from brown-bin organic waste into the province's natural gas distribution system on Tuesday.

The brown-bin collection program, which gathers organic waste from households, now supplies feedstock for renewable natural gas that is being introduced to the municipal gas grid.

This step marks the first use of waste-derived renewable gas in Montreal's public gas supply.
