The illuminated cross that crowns Mount Royal will be dismantled beginning in September 2026 and is expected to stay out of view until September 2027. About 25% of its 1,800 steel components—roughly 450 parts—will be swapped out, and the aging lighting system will be replaced.
The project is intended to upgrade the outdated lighting and replace deteriorating steel, preserving the landmark’s status as a prominent symbol of Montreal after the year‑long maintenance period.
