The formal launch of the request for interest is set for August 10, 2026, and aims to attract designs that could become the province’s third permanent bridge across the St. Lawrence River at this busy corridor.
At present, two existing structures carry traffic between the two municipalities, handling a significant share of commuter, commercial and tourism flows. Provincial officials say that the growing demand for reliable river crossings, coupled with the need to diversify transport options, motivated the decision to explore an additional link. The upcoming call for proposals will be open to companies worldwide, encouraging a range of engineering solutions and financing models.
The Ministry of Transport indicated that the new bridge would be evaluated on criteria such as capacity, environmental impact, resilience to climate change and integration with existing road and transit networks. While details of the preferred location and design parameters have not been released, the government expects the project to complement the current infrastructure and alleviate congestion during peak periods.
Stakeholders from both sides of the river have been briefed on the timeline, which includes a period for expression of interest, followed by a detailed selection process. If successful proposals are identified, the province plans to move forward with detailed studies and, ultimately, construction, though no definitive schedule has been set beyond the initial call date.
