Quebec’s four largest political parties announced on Monday that they will abide by a newly introduced code of conduct governing the use of artificial intelligence in election campaigns. The pledge was made on August 24, 2026, as the parties signaled a joint effort to apply consistent standards for AI tools during the province's upcoming electoral contests.

The agreement covers the Parti libéral du Québec, Coalition avenir Québec, Parti québécois and Québec solidaire. Each organization said it will follow the provisions of the code, which sets out rules for how AI-generated content, targeting and data analytics may be employed in political messaging. The parties described the measure as a step toward responsible deployment of AI across campaign activities.

Catherine Régis and the Institute for Data Valorization (IVADO) were identified as key participants in the development of the code. Their involvement was highlighted as part of a broader collaboration between academic, research and political actors aimed at establishing clear guidelines for AI use in the public sphere.

The code arrives amid growing scrutiny of AI technologies that can produce synthetic media, micro‑targeted ads and automated outreach. Provincial officials have warned that unchecked AI applications could distort public discourse, amplify misinformation and undermine voter confidence. By adopting the code, the parties intend to mitigate such risks while still leveraging the analytical advantages that AI can provide.

Implementation of the conduct rules will be monitored throughout the election cycle, with parties agreeing to report any breaches to an oversight body that will review compliance. The initiative is expected to set a precedent for other jurisdictions in Canada that are considering similar frameworks for political AI usage.

Overall, the coordinated commitment reflects an emerging consensus among Quebec’s political leadership that transparent, accountable AI practices are essential for maintaining the integrity of democratic processes.
