The Société de transport de Montréal announced on Oct. 2 that its transit constables will not be equipped with pistols. The agency said constables tend to use force too quickly, prompting the decision, and it also appointed Martin Prud'homme, the former head of the Sûreté du Québec, to address security issues in the metro system.

The announcement is part of the transit authority’s response to rising safety concerns in the Montreal subway system.
