The Société de transport de Montréal announced that its constables will not be equipped with guns and that former Sûreté du Québec chief Martin Prud’homme has been hired to tackle security issues in the metro system.
Officials explained the decision by noting that officers tend to resort to force too quickly, prompting a shift in policy.
The move comes as the transit agency addresses growing safety concerns within the city’s subway network.
