The Société de transport de Montréal announced on Oct. 2, 2026 that its constables will not be equipped with firearms and that former Sûreté du Québec chief Martin Prud’homme has been appointed to address security concerns in the metro system.

Officials said the change reflects worries that officers often resort to force too quickly, prompting a shift in policy.

The decision is part of STM’s broader effort to introduce new measures aimed at reducing the growing sense of insecurity on Montreal’s subway network.
