The Société de transport de Montréal announced on October 2, 2026 that its special constables will not be permitted to carry firearms or stun guns.
The transit authority said the decision reflects concerns that constables are too quick to resort to force in some situations.
STM employs special constables to provide security on its public transit system and had previously considered equipping them with weapons.
