On October 16, 2026, carriage horse drivers, members of Transport Workers Union Local 100, medallion owners and others assembled at the entrance of Central Park to voice opposition to a city council plan that would end the carriage horse industry.

The demonstrators described the proposed legislation as unacceptable and delivered a message to city officials demanding the industry be preserved.

The protest follows City Council Speaker Julie Menin's announcement that she will introduce a bill next week intended to phase out carriage horse operations in New York City. Christina Hansen and Mamdani were among those present at the gathering.
