The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency began excavating 68,000 cubic yards of toxic material from the Franklin Slag Pile in Port Richmond, Philadelphia, in October 2026, while conducting air‑quality monitoring.

The pile, which had been covered by a tarp for 26 years, is being uncovered for removal as part of a remediation effort to address long‑standing contamination at the site.
