Arizona officials confirmed that a dog from Cochise County has been diagnosed with a screwworm infestation, the first instance of the parasite identified in the state.
Screwworms are parasitic flies known to affect livestock, but they have not caused any human infections in the United States. Officials noted that the risk to people remains very low because no human cases have been recorded nationwide.
