The Washington State Poison Center said it is seeing a sharp rise in calls about kratom after more potent versions of the product have become widely available. The increase follows sales of the stronger kratom in smoke shops, gas stations and advertisements on sidewalks.

The broader availability of these products is prompting health concerns, and Washington remains one of 17 states that currently lack statewide regulations governing kratom.
