The provincial government announced it will select the chairs of Ontario’s eight regional governments by appointment, with the selections to be made within weeks.

Premier Doug Ford and the province’s municipal affairs minister said the appointments will fill positions that are currently vacant.

Opposition parties have described the appointments as partisan and undemocratic.

The eight regional governments currently lack appointed chairs, and the province intends to fill the roles without holding elections.
