A severe thunderstorm watch signals that atmospheric conditions are favorable for the development of storms capable of producing damaging straight‑line winds, large hail, and frequent lightning. By extending the watch to all counties, officials aim to ensure that residents from urban centers such as Newark and Atlantic City to smaller towns like Wildwood receive the same advance notice.
The National Weather Service in Trenton issued the advisory after monitoring a cold front advancing from the west and a surge of moist air from the Atlantic. Forecast models indicate that the strongest wind gusts, near the 75‑mph threshold, are most likely to affect the central and southern portions of the state during the afternoon and early evening hours.
Residents are advised to secure outdoor objects, avoid travel if possible during the peak period, and stay tuned to local radio, television, and online weather updates for any escalation to a warning.
