A Howard University graduate lost nearly $2,500 after scanning a fraudulent QR code while attempting to purchase a bottle of water from a vendor in Midtown.
The QR code redirected the payment to the fraudster, completing the theft.
The incident occurs amid a rise in QR‑code scams across Atlanta, which have targeted consumers making small purchases and have been reported in at least 2.4K cases.
