The cross that crowns Mount Royal was taken down on October 14, 2026 to undergo renovation work. It is set to be reinstalled with a total of 156 new light bulbs.

The structure, a familiar symbol of the city, has been temporarily removed while upgrades are carried out, after which it will resume its place atop the mountain.
