Municipal officials indicated that while the roadway will be unavailable to regular traffic, adapted transit vehicles will continue to have access to the area, allowing wheelchair users and others with reduced mobility to reach their destinations.
Mobility advocacy groups, however, have warned that the temporary blockage creates extra hurdles for people who depend on accessible transportation, pointing to potential detours, longer travel times and reduced independence.
The closure forms part of a broader logistical plan for the international races, which draw athletes and spectators from across the globe. Throughout the month‑long period, race routes will thread through downtown, necessitating the restriction of the thoroughfare for safety and crowd management.
City representatives have stressed that the limitation is essential for cyclist and spectator safety and that they have worked with transit agencies to preserve service levels for accessible vehicles during the event window.
Advocates are urging the municipality to provide clear signage, real‑time updates and additional assistance to mitigate the impact on those facing mobility challenges while the street remains closed.
The restriction is scheduled to lift on October 4, after which normal traffic flow on Park Avenue is expected to resume.
