Five individuals were observed climbing out of a manhole on the Upper East Side on Oct. 9, 2026, as police investigate a series of sewer‑diving incidents. The New York City Police Department and the Department of Environmental Protection responded to the scene.
The Department of Environmental Protection is upgrading the city’s 7,400‑mile sewer system at roughly 1% per year under a Cloudburst Management strategy, while police continue their investigation of recent subterranean exploits.
