The Metropolitan Transportation Authority announced on Wednesday that it will spend $1.1 billion to replace existing subway turnstiles with sliding glass fare gates at 150 stations across the city.

The new gates are intended to cut fare evasion by providing a modern barrier that is more difficult to bypass.

The agency had first proposed the fare‑gate upgrade several years ago and is now moving ahead with the project.
