The Metropolitan Transportation Authority announced on August 31 that physical OMNY fare cards cannot be refilled because of an undisclosed system error. Riders are being directed to use smartphones, credit cards or debit cards for fare payment until the issue is resolved.

The error, which the agency has not detailed, affects the ability to add value to the plastic cards at the network of OMNY vending machines that normally service commuters throughout New York City. The agency’s statement emphasized that the malfunction is limited to the refill function and does not impact the use of existing balances on cards already loaded.

OMNY, the city’s contactless fare system, was introduced to streamline payment across subways, buses and commuter rail lines. Under normal operation, passengers can reload a physical OMNY card at any of the system’s automated kiosks, at station booths, or through the OMNY app. With the current problem, the MTA is urging commuters to rely on the app or tap their personal mobile devices, as well as contactless credit and debit cards, which continue to work at turnstiles and on buses.

The authority has not provided a timeline for when the refill capability will be restored. In the meantime, riders who depend on physical cards are advised to seek alternative payment methods to avoid service disruptions. The MTA’s communications noted that the issue does not affect the overall operation of the transit network, and service schedules remain unchanged.

Officials said they are monitoring the situation and will issue updates as additional information becomes available. Commuters are encouraged to plan for the temporary change and consider using the OMNY app or contactless bank cards for a seamless travel experience.
