The New York City Council will hold a hearing on Monday, Oct. 19, 2026, to consider legislation that would require owners of cooling towers to notify city health officials when Legionella bacteria levels reach a lower threshold.

The proposal is aimed at improving public‑health safety by addressing recent deadly Legionella outbreaks in the city. City health officials and cooling‑tower owners are among the parties expected to be involved in the discussion of the tighter reporting requirements.
