The New York City Department of Sanitation announced a plan to increase penalties for landlords who allow vacant lots and abandoned construction sites to become dirty and attract rats.
The proposal would raise fines from $100 to $250 for such violations, aiming to curb rat infestations and improve neighborhood cleanliness.
The department said the action focuses on blighted vacant properties that have turned into rodent habitats across the city.
