In October 2026, construction on a rooftop water tower on Manhattan’s Upper West Side damaged the nest of a family of barn owls.
The nest was located on the municipal water tower, and the roof work disrupted the birds’ nesting site. Barn owls receive protection under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act.
