Philadelphia has been identified as the poorest major city in the United States in the latest release of the U.S. Census Bureau's American Community Survey for 2026, moving ahead of Houston which held the bottom spot in 2024.

The annual survey tracks income and poverty across large cities, and the newest data shows Philadelphia slipped to the bottom of the ranking after Houston was ranked poorest two years earlier.
