Bellevue, Washington, has begun testing a smartphone-based system that issues both audible and visual warnings to drivers when a pedestrian presses a crosswalk button.
The initiative aims to increase driver awareness of pedestrians and help reduce crosswalk-related accidents. Municipalities are currently exploring comparable technologies to improve safety at street crossings.
