University of Washington researchers have warned that recent operational changes at the United States Postal Service could postpone the delivery of about 20,000 mail‑in ballots slated for Washington's midterm election on Nov. 3, 2026.

The researchers noted that the adjustments may slow processing and delivery times as the postal service works through a surge of ballots. Postmaster General Steiner acknowledged that the service is implementing operational changes to manage the increased volume.

Washington permits any voter to request a mail‑in ballot, and the USPS is responsible for handling the influx ahead of the upcoming election.
