On Saturday, Oct. 10, 2026, the two pilots of the 1983 Gimli Glider will be honored with an aviation distinction award and inducted into Canada’s Aviation Hall of Fame in Gimli, Manitoba, marking 43 years since their emergency landing.
The 1983 incident involved an Air Canada Boeing 767 carrying 61 passengers that ran out of fuel and was glided to a safe landing on a former airstrip near Gimli. The two pilots in the cockpit managed the fuel‑exhaustion emergency and brought the aircraft down without loss of life.
The award acknowledges their skill in safely landing the aircraft after fuel exhaustion.
