A Winnipeg daycare centre that opened in 2024 with $5.5 million in provincial funding is now vacant, looted and damaged by flooding, according to municipal observations.
The facility was constructed earlier this year using money allocated by the Manitoba provincial government. The $5.5 million investment was intended to provide early‑childhood services for families in the area and was completed within the projected timeline.
Within two years of its opening, the centre was abandoned. No regular programming or staff presence has been reported since the initial launch, leaving the building unoccupied and without routine maintenance.
Local scavengers have entered the empty structure, removing fixtures, equipment and other materials. Subsequent flooding has further harmed the interior, leaving water‑stained walls and ruined flooring. The combination of theft and flood damage has rendered the premises unusable.
Today, the once‑new building is overgrown with weeds and shows signs of severe neglect. The site remains shuttered, with no indication of when or if it will be restored to its original purpose. The provincial government has not released a statement on plans for remediation or future use of the property.
