A monarch butterfly that was fitted with a radio transmitter as part of a group of twenty‑nine tagged on the Canadian Prairies has been recorded in Mexico, arriving five weeks after its departure from Winnipeg, Manitoba.
This is the first confirmed arrival of any of the tracked butterflies, confirming the species’ traditional fall migration from Canada to its wintering grounds in Mexico. The monarch is listed as endangered, making such migration data valuable for conservation efforts.
