The Boston Licensing Board approved a request from 89 Charles, a cocktail bar in Beacon Hill, to extend its closing time by one hour on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The change takes effect on September 24, 2026, moving the nightly shutdown from midnight to 1 a.m. for three days each week.
Owner Gennaro Riccio welcomed the decision, noting that the additional hour will allow the venue to accommodate later reservations and reduce the need to rush guests out of the bar. The board’s approval aligns the bar’s operating hours with those of competing restaurants in the area.
As part of the agreement, Riccio also committed to a new bottle‑handling practice. Staff will now place empty bottles discreetly rather than discarding them in the trash, a measure aimed at improving waste management on the premises.
Board member Elizabeth Pisano said the extension reflects the board’s effort to support local businesses while maintaining public order. The extra hour is expected to help 89 Charles remain competitive in Boston’s busy hospitality market, especially during the busy weekend evenings.
The licensing change applies only to Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, leaving the bar’s weekday schedule unchanged. Patrons can now enjoy drinks and service until 1 a.m. on those three days, providing a longer window for socializing and dining.
The decision underscores the board’s willingness to adapt regulations to the needs of establishments seeking to meet customer demand without compromising city standards.
