A painting by the late Chicago artist Gertrude Abercrombie sold at a New York auction for a hammer price of $1,060,000. Including the buyer’s premium, the total reached $1,352,600, making it the first of her works to break the $1 million mark.
The artwork had been purchased for $30 at a Michigan estate sale before achieving the record price. The sale reflects rising demand and higher market values for Abercrombie’s paintings. She died in 1977 at age 68.
