Chicago city lawyers have put forward a proposal to pay more than $260.8 million to settle 16 wrongful‑conviction cases involving 17 men who say they were pressured into false confessions by former police detective Ruben Guevara.
The settlement would address claims that the ex‑detective’s misconduct led to the convictions, ending years of lawsuits related to his actions.
City officials say the proposal will be reviewed by the Chicago City Council as the city seeks to resolve the longstanding litigation.
