Chicago City Council approved a $260.8 million payment to 17 men who collectively spent 383 years in prison after wrongful convictions based on evidence gathered by former detective Reynaldo Guevara.

The settlement raises the total cost of defending and resolving related lawsuits to more than $473 million, with 57 lawsuits filed and 25 still pending.

The approval follows revelations that the former Chicago police detective falsified evidence, leading to dozens of wrongful convictions and extensive civil litigation.
